Tarawih is a voluntary night prayer performed during the month of Ramadan. The first Tarawih prayer is observed on the night of the first day of Ramadan, with the final Tarawih prayer conducted on the last night of Ramadan, before the start of Shawwal.
If Ramadan spans 29 days, the final Tarawih is performed on the 29th night. If Ramadan extends to 30 days, the final Tarawih is held on the 30th night, just before the night of Eid al-Fitr.
The determination of the last Tarawih night in accordance with the decision of the Indonesian government, based on the sighting of the new moon (rukyat hilal) for the start of the new Hijri month, particularly for Shawwal, is subject to the official announcement after the moon sighting committee meeting (isbat session).
For instance, if the isbat session establishes that the new Hijri month of Shawwal, 1446 AH, begins on March 30, 2025, the last Tarawih would have been on the 29th night - Friday, March 28, 2025, entering Saturday, March 29, 2025 - and there would be no Tarawih on the following night.
However, if it is declared that Ramadan completes 30 days and Shawwal starts on March 31, 2025, then the last Tarawih, recognized by organizations like Muhammadiyah following their calculated lunar calendar (hisab), would be on the 30th night - Saturday, March 29, 2025.
Therefore, the final Tarawih night falls on Saturday, March 29, 2025, if the government announces Eid al-Fitr to be on March 31, 2025; otherwise, there would be no Tarawih on that night if Eid falls on March 30, 2025.
